You've no doubt heard of the Winchester Mystery Mansion in San Jose, but that's far from the only home with staircases to nowhere. And with pointless stairs, windows extending past the sides of the walls and synthetic grass lining the outer walls, this residence in Frohnleiten, Austria may be even stranger than Mrs. Winchester's mansion. In fact, it looks more like an MC Escher painting than a home.
There are so many strikingly strange details in this home, designed by Reinhold Weichlbauer and Albert Josef Ortis of Weichlbauer Ortis Architects, that it actually takes a while to notice them all. The first thing your eye sees, of course, is the bright green artificial grass laid out along the entire side of the structure.
Then you start to notice the areas that aren't covered in turf, like the staircases and windows. It's only then that you see that not only are there an excessive number of staircases for a house this size, but that most of them are totally completely inoperable as staircases.
