8 Smart & Stylish Kitchen Storage Systems

A place for everything and everything in its place, as the proverb goes, and nothing exemplifies that like these custom kitchen storage systems.

A functional kitchen needs not only the basics - a kitchen sink, working surface, and cooking equipments like an oven and burners - but also plenty of storage for cooking utensils, as well as pots and pans. But that's not enough, the storage also has to work well to keep the right equipments organized and within easy reach.

That's where these custom storage solutions come in. Take a look at the best in custom kitchen storage sytems that can turn a good kitchen into a great one.

1. Dedicated Kitchen Drawers

Cooke & Lewis created that bespoke kitchen look with their dedicated utensil drawer and pull-down trays. These trays are made from sustainable Forest Stewardship Council-certified beech wood and stainless steel utensils with ergonomic rubberized grips.

Mike and Dolores Rose of The Lubina Kitchen Company designed custom kitchen drawers that are not only functional, but look great, too. As part of creating custom cabinets, Lubina has bespoke drawer systems that are custom-fitted for your tools, utensils, pots and pans, as well as plates.

2. SieMatic S1 Task Channel

Who said that kitchen storage has to be in the cabinets? The S1 Task Channel from SieMatic is definitely one neat feature: the modern aluminum flap opens to reveal a storage channel that lets you keep knives, jars, and tools within easy reach of the primary work surface.

3. Glideware Pots and Pans Hanging System

Ask any chef and they'll tell you that it has happened to them: the pot or pan that they need is at the very bottom of the stack or at the very back of the cabinet. To get to it, they need to unload the entire cabinet (then repack it back - so it's double work!).

Dave and Jenny Hall asked why stack your pots and pans when you can hang them instead. They've come up with Glideware - a new pots and pans organization system that lets you hang cookware for quick and easy access.

4. Simple yet Elegant Pegboard

This simple yet alluring pegboard, made with natural, unfinished wood is proof that you don't have to get something fancy and expensive to get effective kitchen organization. The natural pegboard is created by Jessica Hanson and is featured in Australia's Inside Out Magazine

5. S-Box: Hidden Knife Box

This one is easier to show than to describe, but let us take a stab at it. The S-Box is a clever pop-up storage system that keeps a box out of view until you need it. A simple touch of a finger activates the S-Box, which then rises from the surface of the kitchen worktop or cabinet to reveal the content within: a set of knives, power outlets, spice storage, key storage, and even speakers and mobile device chargers.

6. Open Kitchen Shelvings by Im and David Schafer

Im and David Schafer proved that sometimes the best kitchen organization system is more organization skill than actual system. In fact, all they need are some open kitchen shelvings.

The Schafers moved into a rental loft in the Merrimac building in San Diego, California, so they built everything to be removable. The couple built their kitchen shelves out of unstained, unfinished MDF plywood and let the things they store on them as a big part of the decor. David A. Greene of Dwell featured the Schafers in the magazine's May 2007 edition:

The couple’s proclivities are enshrined in the kitchen area, where shelves computer-calibrated to their condiments and liquors climb the wall behind the bare-bones appliances, warmly lit by halogen spots like an alterpiece to Our Lady of the Garlic Press. Frugality and ingenuity harmonize in IKEA drawers fitted into frames made of construction lumber and cold-rolled steel from the local Handy Metal Mart, and galvanized boxes from The Container Store spot-welded together to fit silverware and utensils.

7. Original Circle Kitchen

What if you live in a teeny tiny space and only have space the size of a wardrobe to fit your entire kitchen? Not a problem if you have the original Circle kitchen from Compact Concepts. The 2006 Red Dot Design Award-winning design features a 180° revolving kitchen - with all the amenities of a modern kitchen like microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, oven, range hood, sink, trash can and even storage. It fits it all in just 1.8 square meter (about 20 square feet).

The Original Circle Kitchen can be placed anywhere in the room, and best of all, you can hide all the messy appliances when not in use.

8. Corner Kitchen Drawers

Ah, corners. Most kitchen cabinetries have them, and most cabinetmakers try to maximize the space by using lazy susans, sliders, or swing trays. But those aren't everything: you can install corner drawers that will give you access to a lot of storage with minimal hassle. Take a look:
